An oval-shaped brooch inlaid with beautiful 14k gold and silver floral motif. The brooch is made from natural tortoiseshell that’s been heated, shaped, and inlaid with precious metals. Pique is a technique of inlaying precious metals into tortoiseshell that was brought to England by the Huguenots when they were expelled from France in the 17th Century.
Measurements: 3.8cm x 2.2cm
Condition: The brooch shows minor chips along the reverse edge, not visible when worn. There is some light discolouration to the edges of the gold inlay, consistent with age and use. Overall, the brooch remains sturdy and fully functional. The clasp catch was replaced at a later date to allow for safe modern wear, as early “C” catches are known to loosen and become undone during use. Overall condition is good, with age-appropriate wear.
