An ivory netsuke carved as a ripe persimmon (kaki), naturalistically rendered and surmounted by a beetle with detailed legs and segmented body. The motif is emblematic of late summer to autumn, combining the persimmon (symbol of maturity and harvest), with the beetle, representing vitality and the persistence of life within nature’s cycles. Executed by the artist with realism and subtle wit in mind, the composition reflects Edo-period aesthetic values of seasonality (kisetsukan) and impermanence, while showcasing the carver’s technical mastery. Signed to the base by the artist.

Measurements: 3cm high x 4.5cm long

Condition: The netsuke is carved from ivory that has been deliberately stained, enhancing the natural texture and visual depth of the piece. It shows age-related wear and hairline fractures, though these do not detract from the overall integrity or aesthetic. No chips are present; the carving remains complete and structurally sound, with all details, including the beetle and persimmon, well preserved.
