An exceptional and visually commanding 19th Century Indonesian kris, with the blade and hilt possible as early as 18th century. Distinguished by its elegant wavy, tapering iron blade, finely pattern-welded with pamor. This particular blade further enhanced by a rare winged lion perabot, lending symbolic power.
The dagger is preserved in its wood-lined scabbard, overlaid with a scroll-embossed gilt metal mount ornamented with a mask on either side. Dominating the ensemble is a large carved ivory sarongan, worked in deep relief on both sides with detailed scenes drawn from Balinese Hindu mythology. One side is centred by a protective monster mask, serving as a talismanic guardian, while the surrounding narrative panels display accomplished carving of figures and sacred motifs.
The hilt, carved from a single piece of deer antler, is formed as the demon Bhuta Nawasari, rendered with expressive features and sculptural confidence, complementing the mythological program of the scabbard. The shaft ring (mendak) is inset with multiple coloured glass cabochons. Together the blade, hilt, and mounts form a cohesive and highly ceremonial weapon, emblematic of the kris as both a spiritual object and a status symbol.
Measurements: 48cm long
Condition: In overall good condition, consistent with its age and historical use. The gilt metal hardware display age-related wear, including scattered age spots and gilding loss, lending an authentic patina. Decorative glass stones set into the collar remain present, with a few showing small fractures typical of period jewellery and long-term ageing. A small chip is present to the top edge of the sarongan. No evident chips or losses to the hilt.
