A large terracotta head of a woman, finely modelled with softly articulated features, her hair drawn and gathered to the left side of the head. Traces of earrings remain visible, originally more pronounced and likely formed as floral ornaments. A good example of Majapahit terracotta sculpture, dating to the 14th–15th century. Mounted on a custom walnut museum stand for display (removable).
The Majapahit Empire, among the last great Hindu polities of the Indonesian archipelago, flourished as a centre of artistic, religious, and cultural synthesis in the region.
Provenance: From the collection of Madame Suzanne Gozlan, thence by descent.
Measurements: 17cm high x 6cm wide (including display stand)
