Murano, Venice (Italy), Giancarlo Begotti for Cenedese, circa 1960-80.
Arguably one of the most labour-intensive techniques for glass artisans, a fine sheet of 22k Gold is applied over the royal red glass, then "Graffito" is created by using a pointed, sharp tool to etch an intricate design into the gold leaf. This museum quality chalice features an exquisite etching of an extract from the c1622-25 painting titled "The presentation of the Portrait of Marie de' DeMici" by Sir Peter Paul Rubens. The cup sitting on a shimmering aventurine stem down towards a matching royal red foot. Signed "RUBENS ALLEGORIA, G. Begotti" on the scroll below scene.
Measurements: 24cm high x 10cm diameter.
Condition: Excellent - No chips, cracks or restoration. Light wear and minor losses of gold leaf are notable to the etching. Irregularities are consistent with the hand etching technique utilised. An overall fine example of Begotti's work.
Provenance: Sotheby's "The Collection of Mr & Mrs Rivkin, Sydney, sold 06/03/2001. Once the finest holding of Antiques and Art in Australia.
Biography: Master decorator Giancarlo Begotti was born in Venice in 1920 and is known as one of the greatest artists of our time in the field of handmade decorations on glass. He worked with Ars Cenedese Murano in the late 1960s to early 1980's, devoting himself to the art of decorating with pure gold, known as Graffito, and coloured vitreous enamel: in this way he revived the ancient techniques of the glorious Venetian Renaissance. His works were inspired by Venetian painters of the 17th and 18th century, however, he also created many subjects of his own with Venetian themes. His works are exhibited all over Europe, while some were included in the private collections of the world's most important private collectors: these included former President of China, Hua Guoh Feng and former US President Jimmy Carter. 'Mappamondo', a globe made by Ars Cenedese Murano and decorated in gold Graffito by Begotti, is held in the White House Museum in Washington DC.
