Albert John Sherman (Britain/Australia, 1882-1971)
Title: Marigolds
Oil on board, signed lower right

Mounted in an ornate giltwood and plaster frame behind glass.

Provenance: From the Peter Bernard Stell collection. Sold through Bay East Auctions in 2012 for $4,132 (including BP).

Measurements: 41.5cm x 36.5cm

Condition: Artwork is presented in good overall condition and has been consistently safeguarded behind glass, away from direct sunlight. The frame exhibits minor chips and light surface wear, as illustrated, commensurate with age. These subtle imperfections enhance its authentic character and lend the piece an appealing, timeworn provincial charm.

Biography: Sherman was a British-born Australian painter best known for his exquisite flower and still life paintings. Born in Cornwall, England, he studied at the Central Technical School and the Truro School of Art before emigrating to Australia with his wife in the early 1920s. Sherman became a fellow of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales in 1928 and exhibited widely in Sydney and Melbourne. His richly coloured floral works earned critical praise and are held in major public collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales and other Australian regional galleries. A book on his flower paintings was published in 1955, and his works remain sought after by collectors.
