Biography: Allan Lowe was a pioneering potter in the Australian scene, working mostly from his home studio at a time when materials and training in the medium were scarce. Born in Melbourne, he moved to Ferntree Gully in 1939, beginning to make pots for a living in 1944 after he was discharged from the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation. The first example of studio pottery in the NGV Collection was purchased several years after in 1947 (a small terracotta bowl).
