An impressive and substantial Victorian Whitby jet mourning locket of polished oval form, dating to circa 1880. The locket is mounted with a removable 9ct gold bezel, allowing the interior to hold a photograph or a compartment of woven hair beneath the glass, as was customary for mourning jewellery of the period. The reverse is applied with the name "John" in sterling silver, accented with gold studs, adding a highly personal and poignant detail. Currently it hosts an architectural photo as a placeholder example.
Measurements: 5.3cm x 4.3cm, with the bail adding an additional 2.3cm making the total length 7.6cm.
Condition: Overall very good for its age, with one small chip visible to the very top beneath the bail, not detracting from the overall appearance. Minor surface scuffs commensurate with age. A fine and evocative example of late Victorian mourning jewellery, notable for its scale, quality of jet, and personal inscription.
