Etching on wove paper, signed in pencil along lower right margin, and signed in print plate 'Sydney R Jones' to lower left corner
Measurements: 32.5cm high x 21cm wide (Frame: 58cm x 43cm)
Condition: Artwork is mounted in its original Hardy Bro's frame, and presents in good condition with no evident signs of staining, discolouration, tears or restoration. The matt board has yellowed over time, in particular the edges due to light and moisture exposure. There are black print marks and remnants of finger marks to the matt board. The wooden frame has small chips and surface wear throughout, commensurate with its age. Reframing is recommended.
Biography: Etcher, draughtsman, painter and author. Born in Birmingham and attended the art school there, after which he travelled extensively in England and on the continent. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Paris Salon and elsewhere abroad Jones provided illustrations for several publications including: The Times, Illustrated London News and The Studio. He specialised in sets of etchings of London, Cambridge and continental subjects. Author of many books which featured the English countryside and a member of the Authors' Club. Jones' works are held by the V&A Museum, the Guildhall Library Art Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield. Credit; The British Museum
