Collection of Medieval Bronze buckles, circa 1250 - 1700.
An amazing collection comprising 13 small cast bronze & copper alloy buckles without pins, most dating between 1250-1450, with 2 exceptions dating to the Tudor period up to 1700. Largest buckle measuring 3cm. These beautiful relics showcase a rich green patination and light earthly encrustations on the bronze, testament to the objects’ prolonged burial underground prior to excavation.
Provenance: Excavated in York, United Kingdom. Ex Windsor Gallery Collection, UK.
Reference: These buckles are typical form for this period. Many attribution records can be referenced to pinpoint the years these styles of buckles were predominantly in use. We recommend reading Weiner-Gozen's Blog Page "Double Loop Buckles". Refer to Figure 6 "Medieval".
