Hans Eduard von Berlepsch-Valendas (Swiss/German, 1849-1921)

Original etching of a landscape featuring a lake with distant factories, signed and dated lower right (H E V Berlepsch, '95). Bears an impressed monogram to lower left.

Measurements: Artwork measures 21.5cm x 27cm (Frame: 40cm x 45cm)

Condition: The etching is presented in good overall condition. There is no evidence of foxing or restoration; however, there is minor age-related yellowing consistent with the passage of time. Framed behind glass and has been well preserved. The frame is structurally sound and shows only minimal surface wear.

Biography: Hans was trained initially under the architect Gottfried Semper before pursuing studies in painting in Frankfurt and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He worked primarily in Munich as an architect, interior, and craft designer in the Art Nouveau style, with notable projects including Villa Tobler in Zurich, the Villa Berlepsch in Planegg, and interior designs for cruise ships on Lake Constance. Influenced by the English Garden City movement, he maintained professional connections with figures such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Raymond Unwin. In 1902, he adopted the name Valendas in reference to his family’s origins, and in later years he advanced communitarian housing concepts and founded a School for Painting and Decorative Art at his estate in Planegg.
