A hand painted double handled vase, featuring red-faced warblers flying and perched on a gallery rail overlooking distant mountains, gilt with gold accents and draped decoration. Made by Kinjo China Studio (Japan), c1910-20.
Between 1891 and 1921, Japanese porcelain exported to the United States was marked Nippon, the Japanese word for “Japan,” in compliance with the McKinley Tariff Act requiring indication of origin. Initially accepted by U.S. officials, the term was later deemed invalid in 1921 on the grounds that the law required the English word “Japan.” Thereafter, exported wares bore the marks “Japan” or “Made in Japan,” and the use of Nippon ceased.
